What actually counts as turnaround time?

Dwell is four intervals, not one: arrival to gate, gate to door assignment, door to load complete, and departure. Reporting a single average hides which of the four is your constraint, and it is usually not the one being optimised.

Will adding parking fix our gate queue?

Usually not. Parking stores the queue rather than clearing it, and a queue is a symptom of arrival timing against door capacity. Slot reservation moves arrivals to when a door is actually free, which is what shortens dwell.

How does automatic plate recognition help?

It removes the manual gate log, so arrival is timestamped without a driver leaving the cab or a guard keying a reference. That single accurate timestamp is what makes the first dwell interval measurable at all.

Can carriers see their own position?

Yes. Carriers can view queue position, assigned slot and dwell history for their own vehicles. That reduces gatehouse phone traffic and gives both sides data to discuss detention with, rather than anecdote.

How is shift handover handled?

Open dwell intervals carry across the shift boundary rather than resetting, so a truck that arrives late in one shift and loads in the next is reported as one turnaround. Handover notes attach to the vehicle record.
